ABOUT RURAL AID SOMALIA

Rural Aid Somalia (RAS) is an independent non-governmental and non-profit organization operating in somalia with its headquators in Kismayo ,Jubaland.

RAS is dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of marginalized and minority communities, promoting social justice, and fostering sustainable development across the region.

The goal of RAS is to improve the quality of life for vulnerable communities in Somalia by fostering community mobilization, capacity building, advocacy, and strengthening grassroots institutions

Thematic areas

1. Health and Nutrition

Recognizing the dire need for accessible healthcare in conflict-affected regions, RAS operates health clinics and mobile health units that provide crucial medical services and nutritional support.

Services Provided:

    • Primary health care
    • Maternal and child health services
    • Nutritional screening and support programs
    • Health education and awareness campaigns

Impact

 Since its inception, RAS has treated over 100,000 patients and provided nutritional support to more than 15,000 malnourished children and expecting mothers. These initiatives have significantly reduced morbidity and mortality rates in Jubbaland, fostering a healthier community

2. Food Security and Livelihoods

Understanding the persistent threat of food insecurity, RAS implements comprehensive food assistance and livelihood programs.

Services Provided:

    • Emergency food distribution
    • Cash-for-work initiatives
    • Agricultural training and microfinance support
    • Livestock support and veterinary services

Impact:

Our food security programs have successfully provided food aid and cash relief to over 50,000 severely affected households, while our livelihood initiatives have empowered 2,500 families to establish sustainable agricultural practices. This holistic approach enhances resilience and combats hunger effectively.

3. Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

To address the water crisis and associated health risks, RAS implements WASH programs that ensure access to clean water and promote hygiene practices.

Services Provided:

    • Rehabilitation of water sources and installation of boreholes
    • Construction of latrines and handwashing stations
    • Community education on hygiene practices

Impact:

Through our WASH initiatives, RAS has improved access to clean water for 80,000 individuals and established sanitation facilities in numerous camps and communities. This has resulted in a decrease in waterborne diseases, improving overall community health.

4. Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFIs)

In collaboration with local authorities and partners, RAS addresses the urgent shelter needs of displaced populations through timely support.

Services Provided:

    • Distribution of emergency shelter kits
    • Provision of essential non-food items (like mattresses, blankets, cooking supplies)
    • Support for rebuilding homes following displacements due to conflict or disasters

Impact:

RAS has successfully assisted over 10,000 displaced families by providing emergency shelter and essential items, thus enabling them to regain stability and dignity in the aftermath of crises.

5. Education

Understanding that education is a key driver of recovery and community development, RAS promotes educational access through various interventions.

Services Provided:

    • Establishment of temporary learning spaces and classrooms
    • Provision of school supplies and learning materials
    • Training programs for teachers and community education officers

Impact:

RAS has engaged over 15,000 school-aged children in educational programs, promoting inclusivity and reducing the dropout rates significantly. By fostering a culture of learning, RAS is equipping the next generation to build a better future for Somalia.

6. Protection and Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Recognizing the vulnerabilities faced by women and children, RAS prioritizes protection services, particularly for those affected by GBV.

Services Provided:

    • Safe spaces and counselling services for survivors
    • Community awareness campaigns on rights and protection
    • Training for community leaders and stakeholders on preventative measures

Impact:

RAS has established safe spaces for over 5,000 survivors of GBV, providing them with necessary medical, psychological, and legal support. Our advocacy efforts have generated substantial community awareness on rights protection, fostering a safer environment for vulnerable groups.

Rebuilding Lives in Somalia: Ayan’s Journey to Safety

Ayan and her family were forced to flee their home due to conflict and insecurity. With limited access to food, shelter, and healthcare, they struggled to survive. Through our support programs, Ayan received essential aid, access to education, and vocational training to help her rebuild her future. Today, she is a strong advocate for displaced women and children, using her story to inspire hope and resilience.

Empowering Somalia’s Youth Through Education

In many rural areas of Somalia, children face barriers to education due to poverty, displacement, and lack of resources. Our literacy and education programs have helped hundreds of children gain access to quality learning opportunities.
